RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF PARTICIPATIVE APPROACHES TO THE CHANGING NEEDS OF EDUCATION
The first is on creating and building innovative, collaborative “make visual labs,” or augmented maker spaces that transfer visual, audio, and interactive experiences into schools, leveraging everything from new techniques in interactive storytelling, to building objects both in the physical and virtual, as well as hybrid and crossover versions.
We both develop these make visual labs for the educational facility, or consult on how to develop their own. These hands-on, fast-reacting education and research facilities encourage the creation, production and testing of new approaches which are unique in that education is experienced as more an immersive event than a string of seemingly unrelated exercises.
Secondly, we specialize in developing compelling, engaging, and immersive educational content and programs, which emphasize a multidisciplinary, multi-threaded, multi-generational – “porous to the community” – lifelong learning approach, with an emphasis on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics). Immersive means not only in “make visual labs”, but also live and in real time, learning in real settings, at/alongside innovative companies and research labs – “in the field” as it were.
Thirdly, we are unparalleled in serving as a conduit or liaison for emerging ideas and tech between educational facilities and university R&D labs and corporate collaborators and clients. WonderLab is a membership-based, supplemental learning lab for middle school-aged children 9 to 14. All while celebrating the exploration, wonder, and fun of learning.
Skybridge Academy is founder Ariel Miller’s contribution to the world of education she cares so deeply about. Her intention is to create an environment with integrated, relevant academics, while providing a vital learning community where every student is deeply honored for who they are as a unique individual. The Skybridge program has a thriving full time community comprised of extraordinary teens and preteens and we welcome homeschoolers to join any of our classes a la carte.
As your child discovers their deepest strengths, they will help refine those strengths and bring them out into a dynamic relationship with the world. If she or he is aiming to attend a competitive college, they will work with the SAT test starting in junior high so they understand what skills are measured and can learn, over time, how to perform highly on it.
Skybridge Academy provides an innovative answer to the question of how to best educate young people. Using written evaluations instead of grades, and their own benchmarks versus standardized tests, they support their students in learning how they learn and developing a sense of what motivates them.
Their experience with college admissions is that they want students with unique accomplishments, as well as high AP and SAT scores. We have 8000 square feet of space perfect for artists, designers, engineers, makers & hackers, fabbers, scientists, musicians, seminars and workshops, coworking, and a ton of other stuff. Anything that needs a space, involves loud equipment, messy equipment (woodworking, soldering/welding, painting), power equipment (120V, 240V, and 3-phase power available), or ventilation for fumes (etching, spray painting, varnish, etc).
More importantly, we have an established community that's growing. There are lots of different groups in Austin, and friends meeting at coffee shops, bars, and homes. If we combine skills, knowledge, ideas, tools, and materials, just imagine the massive projects that could be undertaken! Even if you're not into any of this, but want to learn, there will be some very smart and fun people around to help teach.
We're hackers (defined here) which means we create things and put them together in new and innovative ways. ATX Hackerspace is dedicated to promote and encourage technical, scientific, and artistic skills through projects, collaboration, and education by all legal means.
NanoArt21 was founded by artist and scientist Cris Orfescu (http://www.crisorfescu.com). The purpose is to promote worldwide the NanoArt as a reflection of the technological movement.
